FAQ

Does acupuncture hurt?

The sensations that patients experience during acupuncture range from nothing at all to a brief ache or heaviness in the area being needled though these sensations are described as fleeting. While some patients are nervous at first and unsure of the claim that acupuncture doesn't hurt, nearly all come to find treatment calming and deeply relaxing. Many patients return for weekly or monthly 'check-ups' for just this reason.

Why should I see an acupuncturist?

Many patients begin acupuncture treatment to find relief from a wide range of physical conditions (see What Acupuncture Treats). Many who are not experiencing ailments also seek treatment to maximize their wellness and maintain balance.

How frequently do I need to come to benefit from treatment?

The frequency of treatments varies with each individual. The duration of treatment depends largely on the severity of the problem and whether your concern is acute or chronic. It is not uncommon for more chronic problems to take a longer time to improve, while acute issues may resolve quite quickly. Each body responds differently to Chinese medicine, so your own treatment is customized to your condition and needs. Please feel free to call me to discuss your concern and a possible treatment plan.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments. We can consult with your insurer for the terms of coverage for your policy. If you are covered, we are happy to help you receive reimbursement for your treatment or bill your insurance directly if it is appropriate to do so. Patients can also use funds in their Health Savings Accounts (HSA) for acupuncture treatment.

Do I have to be ill to benefit from acupuncture?

Absolutely not. Many patients come for regular treatments to achieve increased effectiveness and enjoyment of life. Acupuncture can also be a powerful preventative measure to keep patients healthy and balanced as well as provide strong support for the immune system throughout the year.

Are the needles safe?

Yes. Sterile disposable needles are used. They are used once and then disposed of immediately.

Can I receive treatment for 2 conditions at once?

Yes. Often we can craft the treatments to address two or more conditions at once. It is fairly common to treat, for example, menstrual cramps and headaches, backache and stress, or digestive troubles and fatigue. In Chinese medicine, various symptoms that may appear unrelated often have the same root cause, thus are easily treated simultaneously. However, if you were to come down with a cold or flu in the course of treatment, I would focus on the acute condition. I encourage my patients to come in when they are sick as I can help speed up recovery and give relief from uncomfortable symptoms.
